I picked this 12" up a few weeks ago but haven't been able to listen to it until moving back in with my turntable a week or so ago.. since then I think I've been spinning side b of this pretty nonstop. Arp's 'Worn Cassette' remix of Lindstrøm's, 'Breakfast in Heaven' combines the krauty analogue synths of Arp's (Alexis Georgopoulos) debut LP 'In Light', with some of Lindstrøm's good old space thumping 4X4 beats. I dare you not to get amped on its bouncy bassline (check 1:20) and warm happy tones. Ripped from vinyl and upped, robinhood steez:

So this past month (January) has been pretty rad. I was living in Bushwick and working at Eyebeam gallery in Chelsea, which ended up being better experience than anything I could have expected. There are so many interesting people and projects happening out of that place and was really inspiring to be around. Definitely has made me want to learn more about the programming/techy side of computers; if not for making art projects at least just for a better understanding of what's going on behind this glowing screen I spend so much of my time staring at. There's a good chance I'll be working there again this summer too, so I'm siked about that.

Growing

Growing is just getting prettier and prettier these days. Their upcoming Social Registry LP debut, 'Lateral' (Feb. 19th) presents four new pieces whose range of expression and dynamics is even more subtle and nuanced than their previous Vision Swim. On a whole it seems that Growing is working towards a more sparse, more withdrawn type of interplay, and in doing so is moving further away from the loud drones of 'Sky's Run into the See' or 'Soul of the Rainbow', and into a more rhythmic territory.

The album opens with the warm-feeling 'Swell', which sets a reflective and sober tone that's echoed throughout the rest of the album. The title track sounds more like an electronic piece, combining Nobukazu Takemura-esque CD skipping sounds and glacial sonic environments similar to the work of Axel Welner. Check it:

Avey Tare & Kria Brekkin & Deakin, Rings

Sunday night I went to glasslands to see avey tare & kria brekken + deakin. With just dave portner singing along with two electric guitars and samplers, it sounded a lot more like animal collective than it did the quiet acoustic duo I saw play last year at Tonic(rip). Still a very enjoyable performance that made much use of the rhythmically-repetitive loopy vibe that ac has been digging lately. I wonder if this was just a one time thing or if they plan to continue doing stuff as a trio?

Headlining the show was 'Rings'. The first time I'd seen this band was when they came to my town last year to play a benefit show for my high school. They were called First Nation then, but have since changed their name. I think 'Rings' actually kind of works better..less potentially problematic and more fitting with their feminine sound. I'm digging their new stuff, especially 'is he handsome'. My camera died before they played but here are some tracks from their new paw tracks release, 'Black Habit':

Music For the Gift/Bird of Paradise

It's a surprise and a shame that there isn't more written about Terry Riley's early tape works, 'Music for the Gift' and 'Bird of Paradise'. Both were released in the first half of the 60's, a good 4 or 5 years before 'Come Out' and 'It's Gonna Rain', and are both just as groundbreaking as Reich's tape experiments. Why these aren't grouped alongside Riley's more popular works ('In C', 'Rainbow in Curved Air'), is a mystery to me.

The most interesting thing about listening to these pieces today is how relevant they still sound. The expressive, improvisatory, skronky noises of 'Birds of Paradise' stand up to the work of any modern day social registry/ecstatic peace knob twiddler. There are moments in there that sound as if they came straight out of Creature Comforts--but like, 40+ years ahead of time:

Some new things:
I have a radio show on WOBC called Space Jamz. It's at 3 am on Tuesday morning (late Monday night). Tune in on the inner-net and call me and we can broadcast our conversation over the airwaves/I'll be siked to know someone is actually listening.

I'm taking this class called 'creative resistance' with really awesome professor Julia Christensen. She's tight with the Yes Men and is getting them to come here in a few weeks to speak and eat dinner with us. Also, we're keeping a class blog/reblog that's worth checking out.

I crashed my bicycle and got a crazy concussion last week and I couldn't remember shit for about 3 days. I'm now going to have a gnarly scar above my left eye till i die.

The codeine they gave me makes me have intense awesome dreams.

Dan Deacon is coming here on the 4th (along with Health, Video Hippos, High Places). During the day he's giving a lecture about music composition, which I'm going to try to document.

No Age is playing here tonight! And homegirl Karen's band Hand Jobs is opening.

Summer '07 RIP. It was a good one for sure. I am now in Oberlin, Ohio where I think I will be spending a good part of the next 5 years of my life. I keep getting short moments of "Oh shit! I'm in college! what?!" and then other times its like, "WHOO COLLEGE!! YEAH!" It's all part of it sinking in I guess.

Lullatone brought on the child-like vibes. This Japanese couple makes music that sounds as if Nobukazu Takemura met up with Múm to make a soundtrack for playfully wrestling a koala bear or blowing bubbles to in the summer, or something equally as cute. I think that their style has more to do with weird japanese sensibilities than with obnoxious trying to be over the top cutsiness. You be the judge:

Paper Rad @ MoMA

On Tuesday I went to the MoMA to check out Poprally's Summer Jam with Paper Rad and Cory Arcangel. P Rad's whole neo-psychedelic pop-nostalgic deal didn't feel too out of place in a space like the MoMA. What was kind of weird was seeing bands play there with kids flipping out and going crazy on the ground while simultaneously having chi-chi gallery types standing around on the second floor gazing upon the entire thing like it was performance aart. Despite this and some not-so-good acoustics it was still a fun time. Extreme Animals was amazing. It's was also cool to see the superstar creative-technologist Cory Arcangel in action doing his thing. (Yeah TIMARA heads! Whooot!!)

Whartscape 2007

We blew out a tire and almost died on the way to Whartscape. It was a 3 Hour delay on the side of I-95 60 miles outside Baltimore after which we got to deal with some goofy/sketch drugged up mechanic dudes. The Field @ Studio B 7/18/07

Went to see the Field play at Studio B on Wednesday. Axel Willner put on a really tight, albeit really short set. Maybe if the crowd had reacted more like this Swedish one he would have played longer:

His latest album on Kompakt, From Here We Go Sublime has been my get-siked jam of the past few months. Crisp techno precision but also very warm and human sounding. And super pop-happy steez. All this he manages to do with spare-ass tiny fragmented samples looping over and over again and it never sounds boring. It's a really easy formula to F up, but he pulls it off in spades.

Showpaper is a FREE bi-weekly print-only publication which aims to list and promote all ages DIY shows in the NYC and tri-state area. We hope to spread the word about shows that would otherwise slip under the radar. Each issue will also feature a full color piece of art by a contemporary artist. Look for it in your local record store/gallery/café.

Past artists include Brian Chippendale and Ben Jones from Paperrad .

Citysol, Pete & Pete

So I went and checked out Citysol on Saturday. It's this solar-powered music and arts festival all about green power and clean energy put on by solar one. I was pumped for the solar-powered go-karts but apparently that was the next day. Les Savvy Fav put on a crowd pleaser of a performance. Was never super into them but I did enjoy their live antics.

While we were standing around who did we happen to see there but Danny Tamberelli, aka little pete. Him and his friend came up to us and introduced themselves I guess to tell us about this shitty jam band he's in. Also that they're playing on a boat, for $25, which at first seemed stife, but then I remembered, it's friggin Danny T! sike nah.

Anyway, the only reason I'm bringing any of this up is because it inspired me to give a little internet nod of respect to one of my favorite tv shows ever, The Adventures of Pete and Pete. I feel like most people agree with me on this one so all I'll say is damn what an awesome show that was. Thank you Pete and Pete for helping me develop an appreciation for absurd nuanced humor at such a young age. (shot in my town, btw).

For the real nerds I uploaded this Polaris cd I got from my neighbor a while ago (they're the band in the opening credits). I starred all the tracks they released on their cereal box cassette back in the day. (I know because I have it). These are pretty good for some instant childhood reminiscing. Oh and check out the collage of found recordings with references to smoking pot at the end of the last track. I always knew those pete & pete heads were up on some chronic.

Went to a banger of a show at Dead Herring House on Friday. Really nice venue, very welcoming & friendly. About half as many people there than for Big A little a last month but still a decent amount. The line-up was as follows:

Surprise act of the night. These guys were so G. Thumping azz beats and noisey synth licks. Ethan Swans rhythmic body jerking and Brendan Fowler's controlled lanky moves made it all the more intriguing.

These inland empire natives elicited the most enthusiastic crowd response, or maybe it was cuz their music was the most rock-out-able. Either way they managed to get everybody siked on some up-tempo rawk while still managing to sound really creative and unique. It was also their first (definitely not last) time in the city.

High Places

What can I say about High Places other than that you have to go fucking see them right now. Watch out animal collective. High Places has their own brand of groovy squishy organic textured sound on lock. And its danceable. AND the girl is damn beautiful.

After the show it was off to the Silent Barn for a late night sweaty dance party hosted by my pals theserockspop. Great job guys! That shit was bumpn! Here are some pics:
